The First HSDPA Phone!

Samsung’s SGH-Z560 is an HSDPA/UMTS/GSM/GPRS/EDGE tri-band mobile that offers a full spectrum of services so that you can connect to the fastest provider available in your area. At the forefront of the HSDPA revolution the SGH-Z560 connects with the fastest high speed data rates available so that you can download large files, watch streaming video, or make a video phone call.

The SGH-Z560 comes with a lead to connect it with your computer and software that you can use to synchronise its calendar with your desktop. There is quite a range of additional on board software. The calendar is augmented in a group labelled Organiser by the ability to set three independent alarms, a task manager and the ability to write a 100 character memo note to yourself.

The music player itself delivers quite good quality sound, but there is a real irritation in that you have to use Samsung’s headphones as they connect to the handset via the same proprietary connector that is used for mains power and connecting to a PC. You may have headphones with a 3.5mm jack you would rather use, but that’s just too bad.

The Samsung SGH-Z560 has imaging covered, paring a 2.0 megapixel auto-focus camera with a 2.3″ QVGA internal screen, and performs equally well with audio, including dual speakers and a MP3/AAC/AAC+/Real/WMA compatible music player and control keys on the front of the flip. To store all this multimedia goodness, the SGH-Z560 includes 30MB of on board memory and a microSD expansion slot

With several carriers rolling out HSDPA services in Europe, the Samsung SGH-Z560 should be commercially available during Q2 this year. While Cingular is currently upgrading its network for HSDPA, no US version of the handset has been announced.

Work Smart and Play Smart!

Slick and smart, the SGH-i320 runs on Windows Mobile, giving you total access to email and MSN Messenger. Data input is a breeze with the QWERTY keyboard, yet the handset still preserves a compact and super-slim shape for easy portability. Offering a good balance of work-related and fun multimedia features, Samsung’s SGH-i320 is the smart choice for today’s savvy professional.

The Samsung SGH-i320N will get you there faster, wherever youre heading. Its countless different high-performance functions allow you to work more efficiently and achieve more - just what you need when youre on a business trip. Whats more, all these features fit perfectly into the ultra slimline 111 x 59 x 11.5 mm casing, making this mobile the ideal travelling companion. wherever youre going, the SGH-i320N will always add an elegant finishing touch, with its modern black design and dynamic contours lending it a distinctive appeal. Whats more, with its first-class QWERTY keypad, you can type in text just as quickly and easily as on a computer. wherever you are, the SGH-i320N will keep you on track for success.

The i320N doesn’t bring much that we haven’t seen before, but it does have a QWERTY keyboard, 240 x 320 pixel TFT LCD, 120MB of internal memory, 1.3mpx digital camera, Windows Mobile 5 operating system (and other Windows Mobile applications), and dual speakers with SRS WOW effects.

The 240 x 320 pixel TFT LCD looks small compared to the rest of the handset, but it’s actually 2.2” ¬ around the norm for this resolution. As far as size goes the i320N’s display is fine – but when it comes to supported colours things aren’t so fine! This display is only 65,536 colours, not 262,144 colours like I’m sure many people were expecting. While using the i320N by itself you can’t really notice that it’s only 65k colours; put it up to any handset with 262k colours and you can notice the huge difference in colour representation and quality.

Moving on from that though, the i320N offers a very reasonable 120MB of internal memory for you to store images, documents, videos, e-mails, and more. Over the years of reviewing smartphones I’ve started to expect memory cards (of any size) in the sales package. Unfortunately the i320N does not have a memory card in the sales package. The i320N supports the microSD memory card format, by way of a port which can only be accessed by removing the battery.

Samsung SGH-X820

Big On Multimedia, Slim In Format

The SGH-X820 is just like you – it delivers top performance anywhere, any time. Work through your PowerPoint presentations using the document viewer. With the offline mode, you can even work. You can print out your files using wireless Bluetooth® printing or view them on screen using the TV-out cable. That way, not only will your figures look better – so will the photos you’ve taken with the integrated 2.0-megapixel camera. You can close your eyes and relax to your favourite tunes. The inbuilt MP3 player – which plays AAC, AAC+, e-AAC+ and WMA formats – will transform even seat 35 D into a box at the concert hall.

As the world’s thinnest phone, the Samsung SGH-X820 is an amazing device: It is as good at making calls and surfing the Web as it is at turning heads. It makes the Motorola SLVR L7 look like a brick, and puts other thin phones to shame with its 2-megapixel camera and elegant, fun interface. The super-slim profile means you must forgo a memory card slot, and the battery life is on the low side for a GSM phone. The coup de grace: It’s available only through independent retailers.

At first glance, the X820 appears to be slightly wide by proportion; the actual measurements are 113mm x 50mm x 6.9mm (4.45″ x 1.97″ x 0.27″). The design is minimalist, and the only part that stands out is the metal stripe around the earpiece and the flashy Anycall logo underneath. The whole body is completely black, which seems to be the Samsung color this year. Many of my female friends have commented how they would have wanted it in white or pink. The dark color might look too serious, but with the thinness and overall design, I think it can still slide elegantly into a purse. The phone edges are slightly curved, making the grip a comfortable one. The weight spreads evenly over the device, and the anti-slip finishing at the back allows the thin body to sit steadily on your palm.
