Photographer’s Choice

Samsung’s new SGH-G800 is a manifestation of its ceaseless quest for perfection in performance and style. Sleek and beautiful, this powerful mobile caters to the entertainment seeker. Its crowning achievement is its ultra imaging functionality; the embedded 5 Megapixel camera with 3X Optical inner zoom captures the art of your eye in a still photograph or video film. An embedded music player and mobile blogging features further expand the mobile experience.

The G800 is definitely not among the smallest phones on the market: even closed it is a solid device almost as big a stand-alone pocket camera and it highly resembles one by its look. With its serious weight it is almost as heavy too, which combined with the chromed frame makes it feel as a nice high-end phone instead of a plastic toy. For this also helps that the lens-cover and a detail on the battery cover are made of brushed aluminum.

The camera offers an auto focus assist lamp, a xenon flash, face detection and image stabilization. We can say without exaggerating, that the Samsung G800’s camera is currently the most advanced camera inside a mobile phone. The possibility to zoom in three times optically enhances the photographic possibilities. This way distant objects can be captured without any quality loss. This is a true advantage compared to the competitors with digital zoom.”

The menu’s are easy to navigate and are clear to read, this is purely because the font is “very large” when compared with other phones of the same type. The system sounds are good and the speaker is fairly clear. Loud though it is not. The bluetooth menu is obscure, it is located in the memory card settings sub menu.

The Ultra Music

Next generation of Ultra philosophy centers on the balance of the ideal mobile phone and the ideal music player.

Samsung Ultra Music F300 novel dual-face handset design is fresh, unique and stylish. On one side is a large, clear screen with a sweep touch key that makes music control simple, intuitive, and fun. Flip over to the other side for a Samsung mobile phone that has built its reputation on quality, functionality, and usability.

The F300 is a complete music player phone with superb sound quality. It is equipped with a digital power amp and offers a dedicated music user interface for a quick and easy way to navigate through the play list. In addition, the Ultra Music F300 includes a stereo FM radio and a Quick PC Sync function, allowing users to easily create and organize their music library. Samsung’s Ultra Music F300 is still rich in extra features consumers have come to expect, including a 2.0 mega-pixel camera, and microSD™ slot for memory expansion - all of this in a extremely portable 9.4mm slim profile.

Called the “Ultra Music” device, and a part of Samsung’s “Ultra Edition” range on first glance the mobile phone looks more like a Casio calculator from the 1980s rather than a piece of cutting edge technology from the 21st century. The phone’s design is dominated by the rather large keypad and as a result, the phone’s screen is tiny, and we mean tiny, it’s just three lines of text and struggles to even give you space to write text messages let alone display a number.

Micro Size, Macro Music

A trendy state-of-the-art music player that snaps 1.3 Megapixel pictures and videos, and enjoys the most advanced mobile technology available today, Samsung’s SGH-X830 is a tiny powerhouse of multimedia mobility.

The Samsung X830’s design is certainly very special. When taking the mobile phone in your hands for the first time, you’d think it was an MP3 player. The front of the telephone contains a jog dial for scrolling through the menu and in the centre a confirmation button is placed. To the left side of the telephone, you’ll find the connection for the head set and some silver coloured volume buttons. The right side of the telephone contains the buttons with which you can operate the inbuilt digital camera. The Samsung X830 has a so-called swivel design; you have to swivel it to open it. It is very beautiful but I do get the feeling that the swivel is placed on the wrong side of the telephone. It simply doesn’t feel right to open it the way it opens now.

Even a quick glance at the SGH-X830 will be enough to arouse interest in the device, as the spinner style handset is far skinnier than most other handsets on the market. The trade-off with this design is that Samsung has had to stray away from a standard keypad design, and instead arrange the keys in just two columns, which could prove difficult for regular text message users. Samsung has put the slim design to good use however, and when closed the SGH-X830 can be used in a horizontal orientation, with simple track controls and a detailed information display.

Internal specifications are nothing to sneeze at, either. Tri-band GSM connectivity and EDGE data are available, and a 1.3 megapixel camera and 128×220 pixel resolution 262k color TFT LCD display combine to keep imaging covered. To complement the music functions of the SGH-X830, Samsung has added 1GB of on board memory and Bluetooth with A2DP stereo headset support. High-speed USB 2.0 connectivity is also provided for fast transfer of music.
