Micro Size, Macro Music

A trendy state-of-the-art music player that snaps 1.3 Megapixel pictures and videos, and enjoys the most advanced mobile technology available today, Samsung’s SGH-X830 is a tiny powerhouse of multimedia mobility.

The Samsung X830’s design is certainly very special. When taking the mobile phone in your hands for the first time, you’d think it was an MP3 player. The front of the telephone contains a jog dial for scrolling through the menu and in the centre a confirmation button is placed. To the left side of the telephone, you’ll find the connection for the head set and some silver coloured volume buttons. The right side of the telephone contains the buttons with which you can operate the inbuilt digital camera. The Samsung X830 has a so-called swivel design; you have to swivel it to open it. It is very beautiful but I do get the feeling that the swivel is placed on the wrong side of the telephone. It simply doesn’t feel right to open it the way it opens now.

Even a quick glance at the SGH-X830 will be enough to arouse interest in the device, as the spinner style handset is far skinnier than most other handsets on the market. The trade-off with this design is that Samsung has had to stray away from a standard keypad design, and instead arrange the keys in just two columns, which could prove difficult for regular text message users. Samsung has put the slim design to good use however, and when closed the SGH-X830 can be used in a horizontal orientation, with simple track controls and a detailed information display.

Internal specifications are nothing to sneeze at, either. Tri-band GSM connectivity and EDGE data are available, and a 1.3 megapixel camera and 128×220 pixel resolution 262k color TFT LCD display combine to keep imaging covered. To complement the music functions of the SGH-X830, Samsung has added 1GB of on board memory and Bluetooth with A2DP stereo headset support. High-speed USB 2.0 connectivity is also provided for fast transfer of music.
